John Fraser Obituary

John (Braw) Fraser,

Sydney Mines

It is with heartfelt sorrow that we announce the passing of John (Braw) Fraser: husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and brother. John (Braw) Fraser was the son of the late Margaret and Russel Fraser, born July 5th, 1936. In 1962 he married Olive (Sampson) Fraser, and together they raised a beautiful family of five boys. John was employed with Devco for 34 years and, before that, had sailed on the Great Lake Boats for five years. He was employed at Princess Colliery, Prince Colliery, the wash plant in Sydney Mines, and the VJ Wash plant in Sydney.

He lived an active life for many years. He played volleyball with the teachers at Sydney Mines Jr. High. He played hockey with the Colliery League, played baseball with the Cranberry Travellers, and bowled with the Colliery League. Throughout all the activities, he made many long-lasting friendships. He loved to dance, enjoyed reading, a game of cribbage, and thoroughly enjoyed a good game of checkers where he always felt unbeatable.

Left to grieve are four of his boys and families: eldest son Troy, at home; Kurt (Wendy) and children – Meaghan and Jonathan, London ONT; Errol (LeeAnn) and children – Delana and Alexx, Georges River; Scott (Tracy) and children – Devin and Hailey, Sydney Mines and great-grandsons Hudson and Waylon (Devin and Nichole’s sons) and most recently Malcolm, (son of Meaghan and Chris, London ONT).m Dad is also survived by brothers: Pat (Jan), Erwin (Mable), Edward (Sally), and sister Agnes (Sandy) Scott; brothers and sisters in law: Jack McPhail, Arthur (Judy) Sampson; Carlyn (Keith) Voutier.

Besides his parents, John was predeceased by his loving wife of 61 years, Olive (Sampson) Fraser; his mother and father-in-law, Enos and Jane Sampson; his youngest son, Roger; sister Maisie Caldwell; sisters-in-law, Patricia Day, Lorraine Boudreau, and Doreen McPhail – brothers in law: Donnie Caldwell and Ambrose Sampson, and Enos Sampson (Bernadette).

Our sincere thanks to the staff at Harbourstone Enhanced Care, who were exceptionally good to Braw. There will be no visitation by request. Cremation has taken place. A celebration of life will take place on Monday, July 17, 2023, at 2:00 pm at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church. A private Interment will take place at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Braw’s memory may be made to the charity of choice. Words of comfort may be forwarded to his family at: www.jmjobesfuneralhome.com
