John Bernard Gordon, died peacefully on the morning of November 11th, 2022, at the age of 84. Throughout his journey, John succumbed to the many health declines of living with Parkinson’s disease, and in his final days, John was surrounded by the love of his family members.
Born in Sydney Mines on October 17, 1938, John was the loving son of the late Alexander and Ada (Bowne) Gordon. As a young adult, John left home to pursue his career aspirations in the United States. He served in the US Military for 2 years, and then followed his passion for Harness Racing. John’s career took him to Tennessee, Alabama, New York and Florida. Nearing the end of his career he returned to Canada and worked on a horse farm in Niagara on the Lake, Ontario. Upon retirement, John returned home to Sydney Mines, Cape Breton, to spend his final years close to family. He was a beloved brother and uncle. He was a man of few words, but his kindness spoke volumes.
Besides his parents John was predeceased by his loving wife Maureen, his sisters Betty Sisnett and Sr. Ada Gordon; his brothers Bobby and Billy Gordon, his brother-in-law John Sisnett, and sister-in-law Nancy (Nugent). John is survived by his sisters, Theresa and Frances Gordon, brothers, Charles ‘Chook’ (Jennie) and Alexander ‘Skipper’ Gordon (Mabel). He is also survived by nieces and nephews, Anne (Kevin) MacKenzie, Mike (Annette) Gordon, Sue (Randy) Spurrell, Donnie (Jeanette) Gordon, Dave Gordon, Joe (Carrie) Gordon, Terry (David) MacKenzie, Peggy (Tom) Gordon, Angela Gordon, Erin Kaiser (Josh), Sandy Gordon (Lisa), Aimee Gordon, and many great-nieces and nephews.
Cremation has taken place, under the care of J. M. Jobes Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. A small family gathering will be held at Jobes Funeral Home with Deacon Dave Lewis officiating, on Friday, November 18th, at 11am., with burial following.
