John Raymond Holland
With great sadness, we regret to announce the passing of John Raymond Holland (Hymie) on Monday, June 12th, 2023, at Hospice Cape Breton, surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Glace Bay on June 2nd, 1954, Ray was the son of Lloyd Raymond Holland and Sadie Henrietta Elaine (Etta) Holland of Glace Bay. Ray is survived by his daughter Jessica (Brad) Weatherhead – Alberta, and grandchildren Zander, Breton, and Walker. He is predeceased by his loving and devoted wife, Anne Holland (Smith). Ray loved his grandchildren and spent the last few years creating beautiful memories with them.
Survived by his best friends and sisters Pauline Holland (Wayne Doroshenko) – New Harris, and Anita Holland (John Muise) – Florence. His brothers Herb Holland (Carolyn Mc Issac) – Milton, Ontario, Kevin Holland (Chery Hynes) – Glace Bay, Stephen Holland (Karen Thorburne) (Deceased), Chatham, Ontario, Donnie Holland (Kelly Brown) – Sydney. Ray is also survived by many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and many close friends.
Ray attended Morrison Glace Bay High School and, in 1990, Graduated with his Bachelor of Arts Degree from Cape Breton University.
A welder by trade and employed by Devco for many years, Ray moved to Alberta in 2001 to continue his trade before returning back to Cape Breton in 2018 to be close to his family and loved ones. Ray was a member of the “Mark 10” Allstars Senior Baseball Team (1975) when they captured the Nova Scotia Championship title. As a member of this team, “Hymie” was inducted into the Cape Breton Sports Hall of Fame.
An avid sports fan, his favorite teams were the Edmonton Oilers and the Toronto Blue Jays. As well he cheered for his grandchildren in all their sporting events.
Ray will be deeply missed by those who loved him. Cremation has taken place. As requested by Ray, there will be no funeral or wake, and a celebration of life will be held at Pauline’s at a later date.
Jess, Brad, and the Holland family would like to extend a special thank you to the doctors and staff at Hospice Cape Breton for their compassion and loving care of their father, brother, and son. In memory of Ray, please donate to Hospice Cape Breton Palliative Care or the Cancer Centre.
