It is with heavy hearts and great sadness that we, the family of John Edward “Poppy” MacNeil, announce his passing on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, at the Northside General Hospital in North Sydney. Born on September 30, 1940, in North Sydney, Johnny was the son of the late Harold and Lois MacNeil.
Johnny is survived by his wife, Carol Vickers; his loving children: Chris (Sherri), Scott (Kelly), Jason (Corilee), Denise, and Ross (Leah); and his cherished grandchildren: Shannon (Grant), Karli, Alyssa (Hunter), Breanna, Angus, Leo, Sheena, Tyler, and Akira, along with many great-grandchildren.
He is also survived by his siblings: Ann MacKinnon (Gordie), Margaret Aker, Louise MacNeil, and Butch MacNeil (Geraldine); as well as their families. Johnny shared a close, lifelong bond with his cousin Sandy Scott (Agnes), who was like a brother to him. In recent years, he was also lovingly cared for by Carlton and Theresa Olson and their families.
Johnny was predeceased by his grandparents, Hugh (Dottie) and Mary Elizabeth MacNeil; his uncles, Mike MacNeil and Allan (Kay) MacNeil; his aunt, Elizabeth Scott (Alex); and his son, Richard Vickers.
A skilled and accomplished carpenter, Johnny never turned down a request for help and wouldn't leave a job until it was done. “MacNeil Decks” — built by his capable hands — can be found across the province, all still standing strong. He could often be found in his favourite chair, faithfully cheering (and occasionally cursing) his beloved Maple Leafs and Blue Jays.
Johnny loved to tell a joke and spin a yarn — always with perfect timing to leave you laughing. Fiercely loyal, he loved his family more than anything and was never happier than when his kids and grandkids came home to visit.
A graveside memorial service for the late John MacNeil will be held at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Sydney Mines, on September 27 at 11:00 a.m., followed by a lunch at Holy Family Parish Hall.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Poppy Campaign / Poppy Trust Fund in support of national veteran initiatives.
