Joseph Devoe Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Joseph Theophile (Phile) Devoe, age 80, on December 25, 2025, at the Northside Community Guest Home.

Born in Mill Creek, Phile was the son of the late Stephen and Anna (O’Connell) Devoe.

Phile is survived by his children, Theresa (Lorne), Stephen, Elvena (Curtis), and Evan. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren held a special place in his heart. Also left to mourn are his loving sister, Claire (Basil) Marsh, and a special nephew, whom he loved like a brother, Wally (Susan) Devoe, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Dad loved music, and in his early years would pick up his guitar for friends and family and share a few old tunes that he enjoyed, especially alongside his brother-in-law, Malcolm (Malkie) Cook, whom he loved like a brother.

Dad lost the love of his life, our mother Lillian, who passed away just eleven days shy of one year prior to Dad. He said he lost a piece of his heart when she died and that it wasn’t the same after. He was right.

He was also predeceased by his siblings: Irene (James) Marsh, Kay Saddler, Betty Devoe, Gerry Power, Frances Briffia, Marj (Malcolm) Cook, Johnny Devoe, Cindy Devoe, Linda Somerton, Olive (Ted) Marsh, and Patrick (in infancy).

The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to the staff of the Northside Community Guest Home for the compassionate care and kindness shown to Dad during his time there.

There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A private family service will be held at a later date.

As I walked by the dockside one evening so rare,
To view the still waters and take the salt air,
I heard an old fisherman singing this song,
“Oh, take me away, boys, me time is not long.
Lock me up in me oilskins and jumper,
No more on the docks I’ll be seen.
Just tell me old shipmates I’m takin’ a trip, mates,
I’ll see you someday in Fiddler’s Green.”
