Kathleen "Kathy" Capstick Obituary

Kathleen ‘Kathy’ Capstick

It is with profound sadness and heartbreak that we announce the sudden passing of our mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, Kathy Capstick, 68, of Sydney Mines, on Thursday, January 4, 2024, at Cape Breton Regional Hospital, surrounded by her loving family.

Born in Sydney Mines on November 9, 1955. She was the daughter of the late William and Kathleen (Orrell) Capstick.

Kathy’s glass was always half full because she insisted on giving the other half to someone in need. She was an angel on Earth; we all learned so much from her. She was so gentle and kind and taught us to love unconditionally. She had a pure heart of gold. She gave everything and asked for nothing in return.

After graduating high school, Kathy worked with her brother Kevin, fishing lobster and groundfish. Kathy was proud of the fact that she was the first woman fisher in the area.

In 1992, with her sister Mary Margaret by her side, they started Maccabees Fisheries. They worked extremely hard together for 23 years to make their fish-buying business a success until it was sold in 2015.

Kathy worked for the Harbour Authority of North Sydney for the last several years until her passing.

One of the things she loved the most about her job was being able to interact and socialize with the fisherman as they came to the wharf daily. Stopping them as they leave to ask ‘how’d you do today guys?’ and often passing out a big piece of homemade fudge as a sweet treat on their way home.

She was a devout Catholic and a member of the Holy Family Parish, Sydney Mines. Kathy believed her strong faith in the Lord and prayer was what gave her strength.

Left to mourn is her partner and soulmate of 48 years, Vivian Forrest. Viv was her world. Son, Willie, Grandchildren – William and Olivia, Sisters, Shelia and Mary Margaret, Brothers – Kevin (Ann), Joey (Karen), Michael (Kathy), and Abby. Also left to mourn are two special nieces, Amber Rose and Leah (Dave), Great Niece – Ellen, Brother-in-Law – Cliff MacIntyre, special friend, John Glogowski, and several nieces and nephews and fur babies Jazz, Rosie, and Askem.

Besides her parents, Kathy was predeceased by her brothers John and Tommy, brother-in-law Bobby, and nephews Robbie, Shayne, and Steven.

Special thanks to the Cape Breton Regional Hospital ER and 4E staff and clergy for their kindness and compassion during our family’s difficult time.

Visitation will be held in the J.M Jobes Funeral Home, 635 Main Street, Sydney Mines, on Monday, January 8, 2024, from 2 pm to 4 pm and 7 pm to 9 pm. A Mass of Christian burial will take place on Tuesday,11 am. January 9, 2024, at the Holy Family Parish, Sydney Mines, with a reception to follow.
