It is with broken hearts, that we the family announce the sudden passing of our beloved Laura Giao on September 27th, 2025 at the age of 49. Laura was born on June 23, 1976, in Sydney Mines, Nova Scotia. A beloved Mother, daughter, sister, grandmother and friend, Laura touched the lives of many with kindness, compassion, and a generous spirit. Her presence will be dearly missed by family, friends, and all who had the privilege to know her.
Growing up in Florence, Laura attended Florence Elementary, TL Sullivan Jr. High, and graduated from Memorial High. Throughout her life, Laura made many lifelong friendships along the way. Her ability to connect with others and nurture meaningful relationships was one of her greatest gifts. Those friendships, built on trust, laughter, and shared experiences, stand as a testament to the remarkable person she was and the lasting impact she made on those around her.
Laura took great pride in her work-ethic, approaching every task with dedication and a strong sense of responsibility. Those who had the opportunity to work alongside her could attest to her hardworking nature and unwavering commitment to excellence. Her professionalism and determination were an inspiration to colleagues and friends alike, leaving a lasting impression on everyone she collaborated with. After working several jobs along the way, Laura finally settled at the NSLC, where she was entrusted with many important roles. Her dedication and friendly demeanor made her a valued team member, and she formed many lifelong friendships while serving the public. Her commitment to her work and the community left a lasting impact on everyone she encountered.
Laura was most proud of her son, Logan, and her granddaughter, Layla, who always held the most special place in her heart. They were her greatest joy and the center of her world, inspiring her with their love and bringing endless happiness throughout her life. Laura was a devoted daughter who always went above and beyond to support her mother. Whether it was taking her to pay bills, go shopping, or simply relax together on the beach, Laura’s care and dedication were a constant source of comfort and love. Laura was a loving and loyal partner to Richard for 33 years. Her unwavering commitment to her family was an affirmation to her genuine character.
Laura is survived by her partner, Brian Richard Evans; her son, Logan (Taylor); her loving parents, Geraldine (Serroul) and Fernando Carlos Giao; and her biological father, Shelly Ferneough. She is also survived by her brothers Carlos, Shane, and Blain (Margaret); sisters Barbra (Chakkavan) and Brianna (Andy); grandmother Maria Florencea Giao; nephews Jordan Giao (Erika) and Carlos Nugent; nieces Josy Nugent, Sofia, Olivia, aunt Cecilia (James); uncle Carlos Fernando (Mila); her in-laws Brian Evans and Jaqueline Simpson; brother-in-law David Evans (Sandra); sisters-in-law Linda Evans and Marie Evans; along with many cousins, good friends, and co-workers. Laura’s greatest joy was her granddaughter, Layla.
Laura was predeceased by grandparents Daniel Jerome Serroul and Barbra (Livingstone) Serroul, step-grandfather Joseph Dugas and grandfather Fernando Jorge Giao and aunts Theresa (Serroul) Gracie, Leblanc and Rose Marie (Butler) Simrell, Schantz and mother-in-law Anne Marie Evans.
The family of Laura Giao would like to extend their heartfelt thanks of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Emergency, OR, and ICU teams, for their valiant efforts, compassion, and the exceptional care shown to Laura and her family during this difficult time.
A celebration of Laura’s life will take place on Saturday, October 4th, 2025, at 11 am, at JM Jobes Funeral Home, 635 Main Street, Sydney Mines, NS. All are welcome to attend.
