With broken hearts the family of Lewis Walter Maxwell, age 88, announces his peaceful passing after a lengthy illness, on January 2, 2015 at the Northside General Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Sydney Mines, Lewis was the son of the late Robert and Mary Maxwell.
Lewis was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. For many years he was a machinist for the Princess Coal Company, and later worked until his retirement as instructor of machine technology at the Eastern Institute of Technology, which later became the College of Cape Breton. After retirement Lewis continued to work with his hands and was known as a Jack-of-all trades, able to fix or build anything he put his hand to.
Lewis was also a long time elder, choir member and Sunday school teacher at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Sydney Mines, and always had an unwavering faith and trust in God.
Lewis is survived by his loving wife Dorothy and sadly missed by daughters Kim (Donnie) Brown and Cathy Hutchings, stepdaughter Donna (Doug) Howley and stepson Wayne (Marjorie) Sawchuk.
He was the proud grandfather of grandchildren Ryan, Dustin, Josh, Nia, Morgan, Ashton, Timmy, Michael, Corey, Mary and Kristine and great grandchildren Georgia, Brooklyn, Matthew and Karli. Lewis will also be dearly missed by his nephew Bobby ( Donelda) Ferguson.
Besides his parents Lewis was predeceased by his sister Violet Ferguson.
Visitation for the late Lewis Maxwell will be held on Sunday, January 4, 2015, in the JM Jobes Funeral Home, 635 Main St. Sydney Mines, from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. A celebration of his life will take place on Monday at 2pm in St. Andrews’ Presbyterian Church, Sydney Mines with Rev. Marion Barclay MacKay Officiating. Family flowers only please. Donations in Lewis’ memory may be made to a charity of one’s choice. Words of comfort may be forwarded to the family at www.jmjobesfuneralhome.com
