It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our mother and grandmother, Lois Eleanor Hardy, 96, on August 26, 2024, at Buchanan Memorial Hospital, surrounded by her family.
Born in Ingonish on June 21, 1928, Lois was the daughter of the late Carl Jackson and Carrie (Roper) Jackson. She spent her early years on Ingonish Island, where her father was the lighthouse keeper. Lois spent her career as the Postmaster of the Ingonish Post Office retiring in 1993. She was an active volunteer in the community and was a member of the Anglican Church Women’s (ACW) group for many decades.
Mom/Nan/Aunt Lois loved gardening, knitting, cooking, baking, walking, feeding and taking care of people, and having family and friends around. Until the last number of years, there was always fresh bread, pies, and other baked goods, as well as homemade preserves, to feed everyone who would visit. Her door was always open. Her sweet tooth meant there was always dessert, and everyone knew they could find a bottomless bowl of chocolate macaroons and peppermints on her coffee table. She was the keeper of family knowledge who had a knack for remembering birthdays and never missed sending cards to those in her circle.
She is survived by her son, Roger (Margo), grandchildren, Mandy (Keith) Esliger, Matthew, and Graham (Allison), daughter-in-law, Lorraine; great-grandchild Alex; and many special nieces and nephews who were like her own children, and grand-nieces and grand-nephews who she thought the world of. We will all miss her dearly.
Lois was predeceased by her parents; husband, Melvin; two children in infancy; grandson, Jamie; siblings, Cyril, Sidney, and Isa Baker; sisters-in-law, Ivy and Rose; brother-in-law, Alfred Baker.
Many heartfelt thanks to the homecare workers, staff at Freshmart, and family and friends whose support helped Mom/Nan/Aunt Lois continue to live in her own home until the end. We would also like to thank the doctors and nursing staff of the Cape Breton Regional and Buchanan Memorial Hospitals, paramedics, and Osprey Angels staff for their incredible care.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of J.M. Jobes Funeral Home, Sydney Mines.
A service celebrating Lois’s life will take place in St. John’s Anglican Church on Thursday, August 29, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Carolyn Sharp and Rev. Ron Nikkel officiating. Interment will take place in the parish cemetery following the service. A luncheon will follow at St. John’s Anglican Church Hall.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Lois’s memory may be made to St. John’s Anglican Church, Ingonish, or a charity of one’s choice.
