Lorraine Young Obituary

It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Lorraine Young, on February 15th, 2025, at the age of 92 at Northside General Hospital, surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Sydney Mines, Lorraine was born to the late Jack and Margaret Bonnar and was raised by the late Janet and George Collier. Her deep connection to the community and family was evident throughout her life.
Mom’s love for family was boundless, and her home was always open to family and friends. Known for her contagious laughter and witty jokes, she was able to bring joy to any gathering.
Her work life began at Martin's Market in Sydney Mines, and she later retired from Seton School, where she was a figure among the children during recess and lunch. A woman of many talents, Lorraine taught sewing at night school for years and was passionate about swimming, dancing, and writing poems for special occasions. She also enjoyed connecting with people in her community, visiting homes and building friendships while offering Avon and Tupperware products. She was an active member of the Sydney Mines Pensioners Club. Additionally, she was involved with the Anglican Church and dedicated many years to the Brownies program.
Lorraine is survived by her children Harvey (Heather) Young, Gwen (Rae) MacDonald, and Janice Young (Craig Dinham), as well as her grandchildren who were her pride and joy: Lauren Young, Cody MacDonald, and Owen Wells. Mom was a large part of their lives, cherishing every minute she spent with her grandkids. She is also survived by her sister-in-law Georgie Young Madden.
Lorraine was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Lorraine was predeceased by her husband Harvey Young, her parents Janet and George Collier, and birth parents Jack and Margaret Bonnar. She was also predeceased by her siblings Janet Anderson, Mary Devoe, Bill Collier, George Collier, Margaret Ferguson, Lovey Matthews, Henrietta Matthews, Millicent Maclean, Jenny Piercey, Lemuel Bonnar, Jessie Bonnar, and Sylvie Bonnar. She was also predeceased by sisters-in-law Vivian Paisley, Thelma Scharf, and Evelyn McGillivray, as well as her mother and father-in-law Evelyn and Howard Young.
Lorraine will be deeply missed by her cherished friends at the puzzle table, where she spent countless joyful hours during her two-year residence at the Northside Guest Home. These moments were a source of great happiness for her, and her absence will surely be felt by her fellow puzzle enthusiasts. Mom will be missed by the dedicated floor staff who will fondly remember her. We extend our heartfelt thanks to the staff at Northside General Hospital's Four West unit for their efforts in ensuring her comfort during her final days.
A visitation for Lorraine will be held at the Jobes Funeral Home on Friday, February 21st, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM, with the funeral service to follow at 3:00 PM.
Lorraine's warmth, generosity, and zest for life touched all who knew her. Her memory will forever be cherished by her family, friends, and the community she so dearly loved, all of whom will remember her fondly and miss her deeply.
