It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Louis Victor Gale on Thursday, March 26, 2026, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
Born in North Sydney on June 19, 1948, he was the son of the late Louis and Mary (Russell) Gale.
Victor was a machinist and millwright by trade and worked in various machine shops throughout his life. He also worked at Marine Atlantic, a job he deeply missed after retirement. He had a lifelong love of the water and sailing, often taking out his own sailboat whenever he had the time—and a good friend to join him. He loved tying knots. In his younger years, he spent much of his time in the water and even worked professionally as a diver. He was solid, dependable, loyal, humble, and kind.
Victor had a remarkable ability to fix anything and often preferred to make a part himself rather than buy one. He loved camping and had a trailer on the Bras d’Or Lakes. Music was another great passion—he loved concerts, playing his guitar, and gathering people around him. He lived and breathed his guitar and had an unbelievable ear for music. He repaired guitars and loved collecting them. A natural storyteller, Victor was known for his humour, his silly and corny dad jokes, and his ability to bring people together. He especially loved serenading his late wife, Kay, and was fortunate enough to find love again.
He was an amazing welder and had remarkable mechanical ability. He will be remembered for his strength, creativity, and his ability to make, fix, and bring to life everything around him. Everyone who knew him loved him.
Victor is survived by his son, Terry (Jenna), and daughter, Tammy (John). Also left to mourn are his grandchildren, Terilynn, John Lee, Jared, Emily, Ryland, and Nicholas, and his great-grandson, Nate.
Also left to mourn are his siblings:
Alan (Darlene), Joey, Michael (Julia), Tony (Janie), Carmelita, Lois, Nick (Gina), and Nancy (Earl).
Besides his parents, Victor was predeceased by his wife, Mary Katherine (Kay) Finlayson, on November 27, 2018, as well as his sister Brenda, brother Jackie, and sister Edith.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, especially the fourth-floor cancer unit, for their care and compassion. A special thank you to his siblings who were there for him with a visit or a phone call, and for their quiet strength, love, and support. Thank you also to his fiancée, Annette, for always being there, for her strength and support, and for everything she did for our dad.
In keeping with Victor’s wishes, there will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A Funeral Mass celebrating his life will be held on April 7 at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Family Parish, followed by a luncheon in the parish hall.
Donations in Victor’s memory may be made to the Palliative Care Unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
He will be deeply missed and forever loved. He leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and memories that will never fade.
