Marguerite Groothuizen Obituary

Marguerite (Marg) Groothuizen

Mount Uniacke / Sydney Mines

Marguerite (Marg) Groothuizen, 67, of Mount Uniacke, passed away May 27, 2021, on her own terms after a short battle with cancer.

She was born July 25, 1953, to the late James and Frances Cantwell of Sydney Mines.

She is survived by her husband of 34 years, Antonius (Tony). She will be fiercely missed by her daughter Christina Marie Frances (Chad) Fahie, and three grandchildren Meghan (Dustin), Kirstin, and Sean. She is also survived by her siblings JoAnne, Betty Lou (Hugh James), Lorraine, Jim, Joe, Frank (Janice), Dave, John (Anne), also Mieke, Gerda, John (Monique), Ray and Robert. So many nieces and nephews I would need another two pages to name them all, but she always knew what was happening with everyone.

My Mom was the strongest, hardest working woman I’ve ever met. Affectionately known as Muggsy and the big brother who always looked out for her kin. She wasn’t afraid of anyone or anything. She was a fierce Mama Bear. There are many stories I could tell you but the one I like the most is, while we lived in Halifax, an older kid had kicked me in the face over a toy. Mom heard me cry and came storming out of our apartment, grabbed this kid, who easily stood 6 feet tall, compared to my Mom’s 5’4”, picked him up by the scruff of his shirt right off the ground. I swear that kid is still running from her. From that day on, I never crossed my mother. She would give her opinion without flinching or apology, but she never dismissed you for your choice and always welcomed you in when it didn’t work out.

Besides her parents, Marguerite was predeceased by her mother and father-in-law, sister Judy, twin brothers and sister-in-law Helen.

Marguerite would never want to be a burden to anyone and she would never want you to mourn or cry for her. She would want you to talk about the fun times, laugh, gather in the kitchen and sing the songs that meant so much to us.

Due to Covid 19 restrictions, a celebration of life will be held at a later date. Donations in her memory may be made to Adsum House; Donate – Adsum House for Women and Children. Stories can be emailed to tina_fahie@hotmail.com
