Mary Donovan Obituary

**In Loving Memory of Mary Danita (Danny) Donovan**

Mary Danita (Danny) Donovan (Fitzgerald), 86, passed away peacefully at the Highland Manor in Neil’s Harbour, surrounded by family, leaving behind a legacy of love, warmth, and music. Born July 24, 1937, in White Point, Cape Breton, she is predeceased by her parents, Robert and Catherine Fitzgerald, her brother Brian (Merne) and son, Dwight Fitzgerald, and nephew Joey Fitzgerald. Danny is now reunited with them in eternal peace.

Danny is survived by her devoted husband of 59 years, Kevin Donovan. Their love story is a testament to unwavering commitment and companionship. She also leaves behind her beloved sister Mary (Chuck); children: Darrell (Sherry); Angela (Stuart Ferguson); and Lyle (Michele), who carry forward her spirit and values.

Her grandchildren, Dana Fitzgerald (John Meisner), Chad Fitzgerald (Geraldine), Paige Donovan, Kristin Donovan, Michaela duChene, Matthew Mulholland, Spencer Ferguson and Mason Donovan, will forever cherish her memory. Danny's great-grandchildren, Madi and Kali Fitzgerald, Laya Donovan, Isabella and Rowyn Buchanan, as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins will grow up hearing stories of her kindness and generosity.

Family was the cornerstone of Danny’s life. She cherished every moment spent with her loved ones, especially during special occasions. Her home was the heart of countless family gatherings, where laughter and love were always in abundance. Danny's home became a cherished retreat for family celebrations, creating lasting memories that will be treasured forever.

Danny was a pillar of the community, known for her open heart and welcoming home. Her door was always open for a meal, a story, a photograph, or a shared moment of music; whether she had known you for years, or if it was the first time she was meeting you, you always felt welcomed and a part of the family. She and Kevin could often be found touring around Cape Breton Island during the summers and autumns, where music filled the air and laughter was plentiful.

In her younger years, Danny moved to Boston in 1956 where she worked with Raytheon and then moved to San Diego where she managed the Ocean Park Lodge until her return to Cape Breton in 1962. Upon her return to Cape Breton, Danny was vibrant presence in the square-dancing circuit, was quite a card shark; and an active community volunteer. As one of the original members of the fire auxiliary and a devoted volunteer with the Catholic Women's League, she dedicated her time and energy to helping others. Her artistic talents shone in the arts and crafts she created, and her skill as a gifted baker made every occasion special.

Celtic music flowed through Danny's soul, as the niece of the legendary Winston Scotty Fitzgerald. There was never a day without music in her home, and her passion for it was infectious. Danny's life was a symphony of love, family, friends, community, and music. Her legacy will live on in the hearts of those who knew her and in the vibrant traditions she helped to preserve and celebrate. Your melody will linger in our hearts forever.

A special thank you to the wonderful staff at the Highland Manor in Neil’s Harbour for your kindness and support to the family. Danny was a resident at Highland Manor for the past 3 years.
