Mary Jane MacDonald Obituary
We are saddened to announce the death of Mary Jane MacDonald (nee Smith) on September 9, 2024, in North Sydney. Born in Baddeck, Nova Scotia, on January 21, 1938, she was the daughter of the late George and Catherine Smith. She was predeceased by her husband, Daniel F. MacDonald, and beloved daughter, Kimberley Faas.
As a young girl, Mary Jane was an award-winning highland dancer who enjoyed many
Summers at the Gaelic College. Having moved many times for work in their early years, Mary Jane and Dan settled in Toronto in 1969 and lived there for 26 years before returning to her beloved Cape Breton. While living in Toronto, they had many opportunities to travel the world to Japan, Norway, England, Greece, Australia, and beyond. Mary Jane had a special fondness for Scotland and Ireland. She was a devoted mother, and she was an exceptional and generous hostess, welcoming all who visited with a warm welcome and wonderful meals. She was a skilled knitter who crafted hundreds of beautiful pieces over the years.
She is survived by her son Sander (Doreen) and daughter Catherine (Steven), her
grandchildren, Grant, Scott, Heather, Craig, Kevin, Conner, Mara, and Riley, and great
grandchildren Charlotte, Emma, Mason and Myah. As well, her sisters Georgie Edwards and Jackie (Doug) Miller and sister in-laws Patricia MacDonald and Susan Taylor. She loved her girls shopping trips with her beloved friends Sherry, Alice, Sharon and Barb. She will be missed by many.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude for the care given to Mary Jane by the Northside
Community Guest Home.
Internment will take place in New Glasgow at a later date.
