Mary MacKinnon Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Mary Patricia 'Patsy' MacKinnon of Ingonish Ferry, on the morning of January 15, 2024. Patsy died peacefully at Buchanan Memorial Hospital in Neil's Harbour with her children at her side.

Born in North Sydney on April 3, 1935, Patsy was the eldest child of Margaret Hawley (1917-2003). She was a lifelong resident of Ingonish and worked at Smokey Ridge Campground and the Keltic Lodge before becoming the founder and proprietor of Knotty Pine Cottages along with her husband, Rollie.

Patsy was a homebody in the best way - she lived in the home that she shared with Rollie until her final days, and her favorite pastime in her later years was sitting on the deck with him looking out at Ingonish Harbour. For decades, Patsy was a generous host to legions of friends and family, whether they were visiting from down the road or from far-flung continents. Her living room and kitchen were the site of countless family Christmases, birthday celebrations, and games of cards with cherished friends. Patsy especially loved receiving visits from her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, all of whom treasured their visits to "Grandmom and Grampy's house."

Patsy was also a great lover of Ingonish, and she couldn't imagine why anyone would ever want to live anywhere else. Throughout her life she took advantage of all the natural beauty her home had to offer, whether by visiting Ingonish Beach, walking around the Freshwater Lake, rowing close to shore in Ingonish Harbour, or skiing at Cape Smokey and along the Clyburn River.

In addition to her mother, Patsy was predeceased by her brother Kilburn 'Koby' Hawley, brother-in-law Charlie Smith, and son-in-law Phil Roach. She was also predeceased by her half-siblings from the White family Carl, Lloyd, Bob, Geordie, Reg, Gerald, Thelma, and Marie. She is survived by her husband of 67 years Roland John MacKinnon; children Perry (Marilyn MacDonald), Howard (Kathy Graham-MacKinnon), and Patti; grandchildren Rhianna (Travis Halliday), Allyson, Jessalyn, Ali Graham-MacKinnon, Dylan MacDonald (Samantha Kendrick), Carly, Brooke MacDonald (Robert Barrett), Mattea, Eamon, Cullen, and Lachlan; and great-grandchildren Logan, Emmy, Lucy, and Hayes. She is also survived by her siblings Carol (John Church), Jim (Bonnie), Reenie (Lawrence Barron), Heather (Perry Dixon), Gordie (Renee MacDonald), and JoAnn; half-sister Deanie Davis; and many nieces, nephews, and other extended family members to whom Patsy was dearly beloved.

Arrangements have been entrusted to J. M. Jobes Funeral Home, 635 Main Street, Sydney Mines. A memorial service will follow at a later date. Donations in Patsy's honor can be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Patsy's family extends their sincerest appreciation to the many medical professionals and caregivers who tended to Patsy over the years.
