Maurice Whitty Obituary

On Tuesday, June 9th, 2026, Maurice Francis Whitty went home to his eternal God at the age of 88. Maurice was born and lived all his life in Ingonish Beach. Dad was born on June 5th, 1938, to the late George and Gertrude (Hines) Whitty.

Maurice was a fisherman for 54 years and loved every day on the water. He owned and operated Atlantic Whale Watching. He was also one of the first Red Seal carpenters in Ingonish, and he worked many years with Public Works. Dad's favourite pastime was watching sports. He loved nothing more than watching his Montreal Canadiens.

The most important people in his life were his beloved wife of 59 years until her passing, Violet Jane (nee Scott), his beloved son Leonard (Claire Johnson), and devoted daughter Wanda (Dean Barron, who he loved as a son), who cared for her Dad daily through the last number of years, and daughter-in-law Lisa Whitty. The greatest joys were his grandsons Alex (Mae), Brenden, and Brett (Grace), and then came his great-grandchildren Devison O'Brien and his Angel Violet Jane.

Besides his parents and wife, Maurice was predeceased by his parents-in-law Maurice and Casilda (Cavanaugh-Scott) Whitty, his sons Frank, Blair, Perry, infant son Joseph, brothers Freeman, Dennis, Everett, and Barry, sisters Agnes, Lillian, and Teresa, and sister-in-law Sandra.

He is also survived by his sister Cathy (Basil) Favaro and brothers Doug (Judy) Whitty, Bert (Helen Boutlier) Whitty and Joe Whitty, sisters-in-law Flora Anne Whitty and Ivetta Whitty, brothers-in-law Tom Donovan and Glenn Pepperdine.

Special thanks to Victoria County Home Support Services and the staff and doctors at Buchanan Memorial Hospital, who treated Dad like family.
