Melvin Pero Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Melvin Pero, age 80, of Florence, Cape Breton, who passed away peacefully at home on May 2, 2026, surrounded by the love, music, and support of his family.

Melvin was a proud coal miner whose strong work ethic and dedication defined much of his life. Above all, he was a devoted husband, a loving father, and a cherished grandfather (Pa) who took great pride in his family.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Bernice (Snow); his son, Brent (Karen); and his daughters, Dawn Pero-Smith (Baron) and Beth Macintyre (Troy). He will be deeply missed by his seven grandchildren: Kyle (Melanie), Laura (Shawn), Mark, Ben, Grace, Mady, and Liam, who brought him immense pride and joy.

Melvin is also survived by his brothers, Ronnie, David (Juanita), Sandy (Christine), and Wayne (Phoebe); his sister, Anne Marie (John); a well as his Aunt Sheila, Uncle Butch, sister-in-law Elaine and daughter-in-heart Tanya Quirk. He leaves behind many cousins, nieces and nephews who will fondly remember him.

He was predeceased by his parents Clarence Pero and Annie Pero (Jessome); Brother Dacy, Brother-in-Law Cecil, Grandparents Pius, Elizabeth, John Matt, and Mary.

Melvin will be remembered for his strength, kindness, and unwavering love for his family and grandchildren. Melvin worked at Cape Breton Steel in Sydney Mines, and then at 3 coal mines, Princess, Lingan, and Prince until it’s closure. Melvin enjoyed his cabin and fishing in Margaree, hunting with his best friend Loddie, and ice fishing with his buddy Duke. He cherished spending time with his grandchildren through fishing, working on various building projects, tying flies and picking berries. He had a love for music and enjoyed playing with the “Circle” at the Florence Legion, volunteering by playing music at all the Northside nursing homes and playing tunes with Raymond and “the rest of the boys.” His presence will be deeply missed, but his memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.

Melvin loved every child like his own, and in his own words “I had a lot of great friends over the years”.

Special thanks to Dr. Michel McKeough and Louise, Capital Drugs, the VON, Julia Penney and the Palliative Care team for the excellent care Melvin received. Thanks to family, friends, and JM Jobes Funeral Home for all your support.

Donations can be made to the Northside/Harbourview Hospital Foundation or the Cape Breton Cancer Centre.
