Our hearts are heavy as we share the peaceful passing of Mildred “Molly” Julian, age 95, on August 1st, 2025, at her home in Sydney Mines, surrounded by her loving family.
Born and raised in Sydney Mines, Molly was the last surviving member of the MacKinnon family, a proud lineage that gifted Cape Breton one of its most unforgettable women. She was a cherished mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend.
A lifelong member of the Sydney Mines Pensioners Club, she was always up for a game, a laugh, or a story told twice just for the fun of it. But nothing lit up her world quite like Thursday nights at the North Sydney Fire Hall. Molly never missed a dance, and if Daniel O’Donnell’s voice came over the speakers, you knew she'd be the first on her feet and the last to sit down. Molly had music in her bones and joy in her soul.
Molly is survived by her loving children: David (Kathy) Julian, John (Darlene) Julian, Moira (Howard) Hines, Cathy Julian, Mary Carmichael, and Michelle (Fred) Moore whom she resided with. She also leaves behind 10 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews—each of whom she adored, spoiled, and cheered for louder than anyone.
She now reunites with her parents, Michael and Sophia (Griffen) MacKinnon; her husband Charles; daughter Joanne Porter; grandson Colin Porter; and her dearly missed siblings: Jenny, Theresa, Kathleen, Martha, Patsy, Mary Agnes, Danny, Billy, and Lilly.
The family invites friends and community to a visitation to celebrate Molly's life on August 5th, from 2–4 PM and 7–9 PM. A funeral service, officiated by Father Doug MacDonald, will be held on Wednesday, August 6th, at 2 PM. Both the Visitation and Service will be held at JM Jobes Funeral Home, 635 Main Street, Sydney Mines. Reception will follow at the Sydney Mines Pensioners Club .
