Murray Johnston Obituary

Murray Cameron Johnston

It is with deep sadness that the family of Murray Cameron Johnston announce his passing on Thursday, May 27th, 2021. Born in Harbour View Hospital, Sydney Mines on December 21, 1942, he was the son of the late Edison and Nettie (Roper) Johnston.

A graduate of NS Teachers College and St. FX University, Murray spent over 30 years in the teaching profession, mostly on the Northside. He was well loved and respected by his many students. Education wasn’t his only career path - he also dabbled in broadcast journalism. Friends and family coined him the Ted Knight of CJCB, especially regarding his role as host of Talk Back. Murray’s passion for politics was explored when he was a town councillor, and also Deputy Mayor of Sydney Mines.

Turtle, as his brothers nicknamed him, had an abiding love of the written word, a cold beer on a hot day, the Yankees and Red Wings, a hearty slice of pie, the thunder of hooves at the race track, an exciting game of curling, his trusty comb, seizing every opportunity to embarrass his children, big city lights, and talking the ear off anyone who stopped to chat.

When diagnosed with cancer, he took Dylan Thomas’ words to heart, refusing to go gentle into that good night. Big Mur raged against the dying of the light until he could no more. He is survived by his two children, Kiersten, Sydney; and Aaron, Hornby Island, BC; his beloved grandson; brother, Ken (Janet), Pictou; and companion, Judi McLean. He is predeceased by sister, Audrey, and brothers, Byron, Ronnie, Eldon, Reid, Jack, and David.

There will be no service held at this time. Words of comfort may be forwarded to his family at www.jmjobesfuneralhome.com.
