It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of our dear mother on May 13th, at the age of 95, surrounded by her family.
She was welcomed home by those who went before her: her cherished parents, Joe and Annie Ward; her husband, Sonny (Forbes) MacDonald; and her siblings, Les (Mary), Katie (Reg), George (Catherine), and Johnnie.
Norma’s memory is carried on by her sister, Evelyn (Lorne), and her children: Johnnie, Heather (Paul), and Forbes (Tammy). She will forever hold a special place in the hearts of her grandchildren: Joe (Sam), Erin (Scott), Alexander (Haley), Katherine, Meaghan (Piers), and Ainslie; and her great-grandchildren, Scout and Teddy. Norma was a loving aunt to many nieces and nephews.
Norma will be dearly missed by her cousin and special friend Barbara Matthews. They enriched each other’s lives and Barb’s daily presence was a source of joy and comfort, especially during these last few years. For this, we will be forever grateful.
Our mother, Norma, lovingly showed us the joy found in the simple things. We remember picking berries, enjoying picnics and days at the beach, driving in the country, camping, fishing, and playing a game of cards. On Sundays we would visit relatives or they would visit us and share good times and a meal that was always more than enough, always unplanned. We grew up with a truly carefree childhood, spending our days playing outside and always coming home to a house filled with love and delicious, home-cooked food and the treasured family cat.
Norma had lifelong friends that she cherished and she was always happy to make new friends wherever she went. She enjoyed gatherings with music and dancing. As friends passed away, she felt their loss profoundly.
She was especially known for her incredible baking. Everyone loved her beautiful pies, delicious fudge, and her amazing plum loaf.
Norma was elegant in an unassuming way. She lived a life of service to others, always helping without complaint—she simply carried on with grace.
More than anything, Norma was an exceptional grandmother, a constant and essential presence in her grandchildren's lives. She possessed a special gift for making each one feel completely valued, important, and safe. Norma made sure they knew they were always enough, and that they never had to prove anything to her. She gave them a precious gift: cherished memories and the enduring values of kindness and positivity that will surely guide them throughout their lives.
We would like to thank Barbara and Pauline, the staff of the Northside Community Guest Home, and student nurse Alison for helping to care for our mother and grandmother during her last few years.
We invite you to join us for a celebration of Norma's beautiful life at Carman United Church, Sydney Mines, at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 23. The service will be officiated by Rev. Nick Phillips and immediately followed by a reception in the church hall.
