Obituary

Olive (Sampson) Fraser

Sydney Mines, NS

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our mother, Olive Fraser. Olive passed away on April 5/2023, at Hospice Cape Breton. Olive was born on August 20, 1940. She was the daughter of the late Enos and Jane (Conway) Sampson. In 1962 Olive married John (Braw) Fraser, and together they raised a beautiful family (mom’s precious five boys).

Mom graduated from Teacher’s College in Truro, Nova Scotia, in 1959. From there, she began a teaching career that lasted over 35 years, teaching in Alder Point, Bras d’Or, and Sydney Mines. She spent most of those years teaching Math (her love)!! As an educator, she touched the lives of many students, parents, and colleagues and earned their tremendous respect. She studied part-time at Xavier Junior College in Sydney, where she obtained a BA and BEd. Before her retirement, Mom was instrumental in opening Princess Printing in Sydney Mines for two of the boys. She dedicated many years to the business. Mom loved her rock gardens and her vegetable garden, and in the winter took to her other hobbies: cross-stitching, knitting, and crocheting. Mom loved to cook, and for many years she worked on printing her own cookbook, and passed on copies of it to her boys.

Left to grieve her loss are her husband of 61 years, John (Braw), four of her boys and families: eldest son Troy, at home; Kurt (Wendy) and children- Meaghan and Johnathan, London, ON; Errol (LeeAnn) and children- Delana and Alexx, Georges River; Scott (Tracey) and children- Devin and Hailey, Sydney Mines and great grandson’s Hudson and Waylon (Devin and Nicole’s sons), and most recently great grandson Malcolm, son of Meaghan and Chris (London ON). Mom is survived by her brother: Arthur (Judy), sister: Carlyn (Keith); brothers and sisters in law: Jack MacPhail, Pat and Jan Fraser, Erwin and Mable Fraser, Agnes and Sandy Scott, Edward and Sally Fraser. Besides her parents, Olive is predeceased by her mother and father in law Margaret and Russell Fraser, and by her youngest son, Roger; sisters: Patricia, Lorraine, and Doreen- brothers: Enos, Ambrose, and Baby Stephen, sister in law- Maisie Caldwell and brother in law- Urban Day.

There will be no visitation by request. Cremation has taken place, and a celebration of life will take place on Wednesday, April 12/2023, at 10:30 am at St. Joseph’s Church Bras d’Or with Father Nonso officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Olive’s memory can be made to the Hospice Society of Cape Breton or a charity of choice. Words of comfort can be forwarded to www.jmjobesfuneralhome.com
