Peter Bonnar Obituary

It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we share the passing of our beloved father, grandfather, brother, and friend, Peter William Bonnar, “Hank,” who left us peacefully at home at the age of 72, surrounded by the love of his family.
Son of the late William and Florence Bonnar, Hank was born and raised in Black Point, where he carried his heritage with pride, often speaking of the strong roots and resilient people who shaped him. His love for his hometown never faded, and he lived by the values of hard work, community, and family. He will always be a proud “Black Pointer.” In his later years, he made his home in Bay St. Lawrence with his beloved common-law wife of 51 years, Lorraine.
A true man of the sea, Hank spent much of his life as a fisherman. One of his favorite vessels, named “Peter Pan,” was always a place of comfort and peace. He found tranquility on the water and friendship on every wharf. No matter where he went, he could strike up a conversation with any fisherman, sharing stories, laughter, and a deep respect for the ocean. His love for the land was just as strong—his horse, Hurricane, was a cherished companion, and he took great joy in giving children sleigh rides, the soft jingling of bells echoing through the winter air.
Hank was childlike at heart, delighting in watching his family decorate for Christmas or scaring kids on Halloween. Sundays were always special, filled with family dinners, surrounded by either country music or the comfort of jigs and reels playing in the background.
Even during his final weeks in the hospital, his charm and quick wit never wavered, earning him the nickname “Handsome Hank.” He faced every moment with grace, leaving smiles on the faces of those around him.
Hank was predeceased by his parents, William and Florence Bonnar; his brother Freddie (Betty); his good buddy Dwayne; and his beloved grandson, Josh MacKinnon (Brianna). Left to cherish his memory are his daughters, Jessica (Clifton) and Deanna (Sherman); his grandsons, his namesake Hank, Remington, Jake (Cori), and Jeremy (Tanya); and his great-grandchildren, Stephanie, Brody, Breton, Josh, and Bella. He also leaves behind many brothers and sisters: Simon (Cathy), Allan (Donna), Beatrice (Tommy), Elizabeth (David), Willa, Maggie (Jim), and Mary (Bert); special brothers Johnny & Peter; as well as many dear friends, including his lifelong friend Henry Burton, who will always remember his generosity and kind heart.
Hank had a way of making everyone feel welcome, whether by offering a fresh catch of fish, a helping hand, or a good story. His life was a testament to love, friendship, and the strength of a close-knit community. His memory will live on in the laughter, the music, and the big legacy he leaves behind.
A wake will be held at his daughter Jessica's home, 3119 Bay St. Lawrence Road, on Saturday, February 15, 2025, from 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM, and Sunday, February 16, 2025, from 2:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Funeral services will be announced later in the spring.

Gone fishing but never gone from our hearts.
Like the waves that roll in, his love will never part.
With every cast of the line, his spirit is free,
A fisherman at heart, where the river meets the sea.
