It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of our dear mother, Rebecca (Betty) Elizabeth (Caldwell) Sommers on Saturday May 18, 2024, at the age of 86. Mom passed quietly and peacefully in Middle Sackville where she resided with her daughter Linda and her son-in-law Matt. Mom was born August 25th,1937 to Donald Sr and Violet (Matthews) Caldwell. The world has lost a beautiful soul.
Rebecca was the loving wife of Carl James Sommers who passed away on November 25th, 2022. Left to mourn are her children, Donald (Shawna) Sydney Mines, Gail (Lyle) Prince George, Stewart, Middle Sackville, and Linda (Matt) Middle Sackville; her two adored grandsons, Gregory (Danielle)Sommers, and Matthew (Payton) Skinner; her great grandson Emmett Sommers; her grand furbabies Raz, Ruger, Misty, Oreo, and Tritan. She is also survived by her sister and brother-in-law Linda (Armand) Sanguigni, Toronto, her brother and sister- in-law Stewart (Gret) Caldwell, Groves Point. Mom left many nieces and nephews and friends to mourn her loss as well.

She was also predeceased by her niece Mary Pero and nephew Sheldon Caldwell.
After traveling to Ontario for a few years Mom returned home to the place where her heart will remain. After returning home she married the love of her life, Carl James Sommers, on December 1st, 1961. Shortly after they moved to Halifax. But the longing for home was too much. They returned home to Sydney Mines after a couple of years, and this is where they lived from then on. Rebecca was a loving and caring Mother, Grandmother, Great grandmother, sister, aunt, and sister-in-law to her family. The simplest pleasures in life brought great joy to Mom. She loved her Sunday night visits with Maisie, her best friend for life and wife of her brother Donald Caldwell Jr., weekly meetings and trips with her TOPS friends and teaching the little ones of the Margaree bunch to swim. She enjoyed doing cross stitch, painting beautiful wooden crafts, or just having a cup of tea with a friend in her kitchen. Mom was her happiest in her Kitchen where she created some of the best meals and sweets you have ever tasted. She was forever baking and cooking for family, friends, and her neighborhood.
Mom, we want to Thank You for everything you have done for us and the life, love, and teachings you have given us. Your support, wisdom and love was unwavering. We will miss you dearly. You will forever remain a part of us and in our hearts until we meet again. The loss is unmeasurable but so is the love left behind.
We, the family of Rebecca, would like to extend special Thanks to Dr. Marie York (Family Physician), Dr. Ashley Miller and her team on 8.2 at the Halifax Infirmary site, Northside Homecare in Sydney Mines; Paramed Homecare in Halifax especially Catherine Duggan and Jennifer Fudge for your loving care of Mom. We would also like to thank the Homecare Co-ordinators, Cathy Walker and Michelle Anderson, for always being there to help us. To the many families and friends who stopped by with treats and meals for her, or even just for a visit, that meant the world to her and to us. To her brother Stewart and sister-in-law Gret for never missing a chance to bring her favorite meals and treats or just to have a visit. She would light up so much to see you. For that, we thank you so much.
Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Rebecca’s life is scheduled for Sunday, May 26, 2024, from 1pm to 3 pm at Jobes Funeral Home, 635 Main Street, Sydney Mines. A private family burial will be held at a later date.
