It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our dear brother, father, grandfather and uncle, Robert “Roger” Quirk, age 65, on January 10, 2026, at the Northside Guest Home, after a long and valiant battle with Multiple Myeloma. Born November 15, 1960, he was the son of the late Michael and Marguerite Quirk of North Sydney.
Roger grew up with a loving family in North Sydney, attending St. Joseph School. As a young boy, he enjoyed playing sports and became a fairly capable goalie and baseball player. One of his claims to fame in his younger years was stopping wicked slap shots from Al MacInnis, a Cape Bretoner who later went on to play in the NHL. Games against MacInnis often left Roger with a very sore catching hand and many puck-sized bruises that took nearly the whole summer to heal. His athletic abilities also shone on the baseball diamond, where he played for the Giants in the North Sydney Little League.
Later in life, Roger moved to the Kentville area where he worked in construction, becoming an accomplished and meticulous carpenter who would always lend a helping hand to family and friends. These skills were instrumental in rebuilding the family cottage in Margaree Valley, which became his peaceful little piece of heaven on earth.
Roger is survived by his nine siblings: Carol Quirk and Florence Oakes, North Sydney; Linda Phillips, Bedford; Marlene (David) Farrell, Georges River; Wayne (Patricia), North Alton; Glen (Heather), Oromocto, NB; Margaret (Roy) Sawler, Liverpool; Albert (Mary), Leitches Creek; and Terry, Dartmouth. He is also survived by his daughter, Amanda Devoe, Sydney Mines; as well as many nieces and nephews who dearly loved their Uncle Roger.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his eldest brother William; his youngest brother Alexander; brother-in-law Garnett Phillips; sisters-in-law Nona Quirk and Willena Quirk; and nephew Monty Farrell.
Final arrangements for Roger have been entrusted to J.M. Jobes Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. Cremation has taken place, with service and burial to be announced at a later date. In memory of Roger, donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to Dr. Brown; staff of the Northside Guest Home; staff of My Cape Breton Home; staff of the Northside General Hospital; and staff of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital for the excellent care provided to Roger over the past number of years.
