Ruth Jean Vickers
The Vickers family wish to announce the peaceful passing of Jean Vickers on July 31, 2022, with her family by her side.
Jean was born on Sunny Slopes Farm, Groves Point in 1927 to parents Judson and Ruth (MacKinnon) Taylor. She was the oldest of three children, with brothers Hugh Taylor (Elaine) and Lewis (Carolyn). At an early age, Jean’s mother Ruth passed away and Jean and her brothers were raised by her father and grandmother, Bell MacKinnon, better known as “Granny”.
During high school, Jean lived in North Sydney with close family members and good friends, the MacLeod Family (Ethel and Alec and children, Catherine, Bill, Sandy and Verna). Later, Jean attended Nursing School at Glace Bay General Hospital and later worked as a nurse at Harbourview Hospital in Sydney Mines and the Northside General, where she made many lifetime friends. During this same time, Jean met Stan Vickers who would become her husband of almost 70 years. Together, Jean and Stan raised their five children, Stuart, Lynn, Bruce, Eric, Gary, and grandson Paul at their family home on Vickers Lane in Sydney Mines.
Jean had a great sense of humour and loved to spend time playing cards and socializing with good friends. Jean also enjoyed travelling and had many great memories of her travels to Europe with lifelong friends, Diane and Charlie Layton, Marg and Stan Gooding. Jean never shied away from a party and enjoyed many New Years Eve, Halloween and the odd political conventions dressing up in any assortment of costumes or disguise.
Jean is survived by her daughter Lynn, sons Bruce (Carol) and Gary. Daughter in law Elizabeth, special grandson Paul (Janie), sister-in-Law Carolyn Taylor, 12 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, 3 great-great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Jean is pre-deceased by husband Stan, sons Stuart (Elizabeth) and Eric, brothers Hughie (Elaine) and Lewis (Carolyn).
Cremation has taken place, a celebration of Jean’s life will be held at Carmen United Church, Sydney Mines on Wednesday August 10, 2022 at 10 am.
