Shirley Rendell Obituary

It is with the heaviest of hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved mother and grandmother, Shirley Rendell, at the Northside Community Guest home, after a long journey with dementia
Born on November 5th 1936, Shirley was the daughter of the late Patrick and Nellie (Coakley) Jessome of Florence.
Shirley met her husband John, doing what she loved to do – dancing. After that Scotch Lake dance the young pair were off on an adventure to Kitimat BC, before returning home to raise their three boys and spend the next 63 years together.
Nanny was very proud of the years she spent as a seamstress, sewing clothes for family and neighbors, as well as many a wedding dress, and of her years at the Northside Harbour View Hospital as cook, until she retired. She may have been most proud of her “little white lie” that allowed her to initially take her cooking course – telling instructors that she had completed grade 11 (and not grade 3 - quite scandalous)
Shirley’s proudest accomplishment, however, were her children and grandchildren. Any where she went, she was sure to be telling someone about their “doings”, spending time baking and having sleepovers and lunch dates with her grandchildren were some of the highlights of her (and their) day
After retirement, Shirley led a full and busy life of teaching crafts at club 55, line dancing with her troop, and going on trips, lunching with her friends, and one of her favourite pastimes – bringing sweets to her favourite people. No one was ever hungry as long as Shirley was around, and nothing made her happier than to give – food, a smile, a hug, her time – so happy to give.
Anyone who ever met Shirley, knew they had met a special person. She was always so happy to have company drop by, to meet an old (or new!) friend at the mall, or to be able to give a treat to a small child. Everywhere she went, she made people smile, and feel good about themselves.
Shirley is survived by her two sons Wayne (Gloria) and Gerry (Garlie), Sisters Yvonne Bereta and Patti Jardine, and sister-in-law Norma Steele. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Albert (Cheryl), Melissa (Gary), John Wayne (Jessica), Chrissy, Robert, Enykia, Rebecca, Jennifer, Jamie-Lynn and Gus; as well as many nieces, nephews, and great-grand children.
Besides her parents, Shirley was predeceased by her husband John, her second son Eric, sisters Nellie, Winnie, Irine and Sis, and her brothers Harry, Steven, Carl, Dave and Ambrose.
Whether she was Boot Scootin’ across the dance floor or simply stopping by with a “little something to brighten your day” Shirley leaves behind a legacy of warm smiles and thoughtfulness. No one ever made you feel as special as Shirley did.
We, the family, would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff of Northside Community Guest Home for the amazing care and compassion shown during Nanny’s stay. It will never be forgotten.
In keeping with Shirley’s wishes, a private family service will be held at a later date.
