It is with profound grief and sadness that we, the family of Stephen “Brett” MacDonald, announce his passing on August 22, 2025, as the result of an accidental fall.
Brett worked in the construction industry as a sprinkler fitter for seventeen years and was a proud member of UA Local 56, Plumbers and Pipefitters.
In his younger years, Brett loved playing baseball and was proud to have been part of the Sydney Mines Ramblers. Under the guidance of Coach Greg Cordy, the team won the national championship in 2004 and went on to represent Canada at the world championships in South Carolina.
Brett had a heart as big as the sky and a kindness that knew no limits. Sometimes it felt as though he was too good for this world.
We, his parents and brothers, will miss him forever, but we take comfort in believing he is reunited with his best friend, Alex Johnson, whose passing Brett never fully came to terms with.
Over the years, Brett formed many close friendships—too many to name—but he loved you all, and you know who you are.
Brett is survived by his parents, Paul and Patti (Reashore) MacDonald; his big bro, Geoffery; and his little bro, Josh. Brett loved his brothers more than anything in the world, and they loved him the same in return. His close as a brother friend, Francis McCormick. He is also survived by many special cousins, aunts, and uncles on both the Reashore and MacDonald sides of the family, all of whom he loved deeply.
Brett would also want us to mention his love for his “special girls”: Marissa, Sierra, Marley, and Frizzles.
He was predeceased by his grandparents, Susie and Lloyd MacDonald, and Daniel and Marie Reashore; his infant sister, Melissa Sue, whom we hope he finally gets to meet in heaven; his uncle and godfather, Lloyd MacDonald; his uncles, Brian and Kevin Reashore; and his aunt, Karen Reashore.
Visitation will be held on Friday, August 29, from 5–8 p.m. at JM Jobes Funeral Home, Main Street, Sydney Mines. A funeral mass will take place on Saturday, August 30, at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, North Sydney, followed by interment at Holy Cross Cemetery, Johnson Road, North Sydney. Services will be conducted by Father Doug MacDonald.
All who knew and loved Brett are warmly invited to attend.
