Tompkins Stanley MacKinnon

Born in Cheticamp on May 17th, 1944, Stanley lived most of his life in Dingwall and the Cape North area. A proud alumnus of Saint Francis Xavier and Dalhousie Universities, Stanley became a lifelong educator and filled his days pursuing many interests; including genealogy, gardening, inventing and building. One of his favorite activities, which became a passion, was playing the fiddle. He became an accomplished musician, released a CD as well as published a book, and was a proud member of the Cape Breton Fiddlers Association. One of his happiest memories was travelling to Scotland to perform. Playing the fiddle became an unlikely catalyst to a unique business venture; Fiddlin’ Whale Tours. When Captain Stan called to the whales with his fiddle, it was truly a sight to behold. Stanley was the recipient of the Star of Courage, Canada’s second highest award for bravery. He was presented this medal for risking his life while saving his nephew from a devastating housefire. Stanley had many good friends and in later years, he began to spend his winters in Sarasota, where he became a happy, active member of the Southwinds community. There he met many wonderful people who added to his circle of treasured friendships.
He passed peacefully at his beloved “Fiddlers Green” in Dingwall on Saturday April 19th, comforted by family and knowing he was loved. 
Those who knew him will remember him as personable, determined and independent. He cheered for the underdog and loved nature. He was goal oriented, took his time, wrote and collected poetry & music and loved simple things like a good cup of tea or bowl of porridge.
Stanley was predeceased by his beloved parents Lillian (nee: Elmourne) and Kenneth MacKinnon; sisters: Mary Ann (Leo) MacNeil and Effie MacKinnon; brother Kenneth (Doreen) MacKinnon. Stanley is survived by his longtime companion, Margaret Courtney; special friend Evelyn Dixon, brother Elmourne MacKinnon (Shelly); children: Mary Lynn (Maynard) MacKinnon, Kinnon MacKinnon (Tracy), Jamie (Cheryl) Dixon, Mark Earle (Lisa); grandchildren: Eric (Jessica), Brandon (Makayla), Autumn (Luke); Jenacy, Lily, and Sean; great-grandchildren Loch, Poppy & Larkyn.  
When he heard the prognosis, he was satisfied that he had done everything he wanted to do in life. May we all be so blessed.
Wake will be held on May 1st at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, Dingwall from 2pm-4pm and 7pm-9pm. Funeral will be held the following day at 11am. Private Interment in MacPherson's Pioneer Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to palliative care or charity of your choice.
