Walter Alvin Day Obituary

Walter Alvin Day “Poppy”

Little Bras D'or

It is with profound sadness, our family announces the peaceful passing of Alvin (Poppy) on November 16th, 2022, surrounded by his loving family at the age of 85. Born Oct 3rd 1937, son of the late Walter and Regis Day, Dad began his career delivering groceries and eventually working his way up to managing the Bras d’Or Co-op for 36 years. He married the love of his life, Mary Frances Young in 1965 and together had 4 children.

Alvin spent his retirement actively involved in helping his son, Paul in the running of the Blue Mist where he enjoyed many friendships, new acquaintances, listening to his favorite music, and lending an ear to all who needed it. He couldn’t wait for the Cape Breton Post to be delivered each morning to do his daily crypto quote, sudoku, and crossword puzzles. A gentle, kind soul; Poppy was always readily available to babysit, dog sit, taxi grandchildren to various activities and events. We depended on his generosity and kindness more times than we can count.

Alvin is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Mary Frances (Young); His 4 children Paula (Adam) Jessome, Paul (Danielle), Lisette (Darryl) Wright and Stephen (Carla). He is also survived by 6 grandchildren; Barry, Victoria, Ryan, Nicole, Addysen, and Moira, all whom he enjoyed immensely and brought such joy to his life.

Alvin leaves behind his sisters, Mildred Winstanley (late Jack), Joan Nugent (late Billy), Keitha Fahey (late Billy), Miriam Gouthro (Vic), Wanda Rideout (Alex) and brother Billy (Marcella).

He is also survived by in laws Elizabeth Legacy (late Ron) and Laurette Warren (late Larry).

Besides his parents, mother and father-in-law Charlotte and Bill Young, he was predeceased by his sister Theresa Maclean (Wilson), and brothers Reginald, Wayne, Alexander (Brother), Bernie (Norma) and Urban (Patricia) and brother-in-law William Young.

The family would like to thank, Dr. Eugene Ignacio and the staff of the Northside Guest home and the staff of the Northside General Hospital for all their care and support of our dad for the past 5 months. Your compassion did not go unnoticed.
