It is with broken hearts and absolute shock, following complications after surgery, that we announce the sudden passing of William “Bill” Carey on December 6, 2025, at the age of 81.
Bill was born in Bras d’Or, Cape Breton, on June 12, 1944, to the late Thomas and Mary (Quinn) Carey. His working career included sailing on the lake boats until the opening of the Heavy Water Plant in Glace Bay, where he worked from 1972 to 1986. He was later employed with A.W. Leil until his retirement in 2015.
Bill was very active in union affairs with the Operating Engineers Local 721 and the International Foundation of Employee Benefits Plan. He loved a good game of cards and travelled often, sharing fun times with friends who shared his passion for playing cards. Bill enjoyed reminiscing about days gone by, as well as making new memories with friends and family. He cherished every moment spent watching and encouraging his grandchildren as they grew into the people they are today.
Bill is survived by his son, Trevor; grandchildren Nolan and Brylee, who were his greatest source of joy; daughter-in-law Stacey (Reno) Carey; sister Irene LeBeouf; partner Sheila Mitchell; and John Brennick, who thought of Bill as his second father. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews, cousins, card buddies, co-workers, and friends too numerous to name.
Bill was predeceased by his beloved wife, Carmelita (Livingston); his son, Todd; sisters Evelyn (Doug) Gardiner, Margaret (Joe) Szalay, and Mary Carey; brother John “Sonny” Carey; and brother-in-law Clem LeBeouf.
Cremation has taken place. A Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, December 19, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Parish, North Sydney, officiated by Father Doug MacDonald. A lunch will follow the Mass at St. Joseph’s Bras d’Or Hall. All are welcome to attend.
Donations in Bill’s memory may be made to your local food bank to help those less fortunate this holiday season.
