It is with deep sadness that we, the family of William (Willie) Terrance Penny, 75, of Florence, announce his peaceful passing at the Northside General Hospital on Monday, May 30, 2022 after a brief battle with cancer.

Born in Glace Bay on February 27, 1947, and raised in Sydney Mines, Willie was a family man who loved and dedicated most of his life to raising his 4 daughters. He lived with his daughter Norma Jean and helped raise her 3 sons, who he loved as if they were his own kids. He always loved spending time with his children, grandkids, and neighborhood children who called him “Poppy Da”. In his younger years Willie worked in the Coal Mines, the Lake Boats and for Leisure Services before he had to retire for medical reasons. He loved to spend his time fixing lawnmowers, bicycles for the neighborhood children and walking his four-legged friend, Lou. He also enjoyed fishing with his friends, country music, playing a tune on his guitar, telling a story along with a joke or two, and watching the news.

Willie is survived by his children, daughters; Norma, Tammy (Alex Gear), Kimberly (Jason) Penny, Jolene (Eric) Davis. sons; Travis and Terry (Lisa) Penny, and the mother of his daughters Willhena Boutilier. siblings; Philly (Jackie) Penny, George (Alexis) Penny, Gary (Norma) Penny, Darlene (Richard) Carroll, Doreen (Walter) Kitchen, Ronnie Penny and Ritchie Penny. Grandchildren; Henry, George, Jordan, Mikey, Zachary, Nick, Nathan, Catherine, Connor, Morgan, Aiden, Andrew, Terrilynn and Ashley. Great grandchildren; Taylor, Kylie and Paisley, along with many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents Leona (Forest) and George Penny. Siblings; Theresa Turner, Vernon, brothers-in-law Ken Turner and Danny Parks; grandson Joshua, mother and father-in-law Kathleen (Rose) and Joseph Boutilier, and best friend David Reynolds. He was also predeceased by 2 sons and 1 daughter who passed at infancy, and a niece Kelly Smith.

There will be no visitation as per Willie’s wishes. A funeral mass will take place at Holy Family Church in Sydney Mines on Saturday June 4, 2022, at 11:00 am. Burial to take place immediately afterwards in St. Stephen’s Cemetery, Florence.

The family would like to thank his family doctor, Dr. Michel McKeough, Dr. Alexander Wawer and nurses and staff of 4 West at the Northside General Hospital, along with the Palliative Care Team. We would also like to thank Philly and Jackie, along with many other family and friends that helped us in our time of need. We appreciate each and every one of you.
