Donald Ian MacDonald

Sydney Mines

On July 18th, 2019, our world stopped.  Ian passed away suddenly at his home and joined our mom, Diane, in heaven.

Ian was a brilliant teacher for over 33 years and then after a brief hiatus he took a temporary gig with the MLA Constituency Office for the last 13 years, 9 of the last years with his friend and colleague, Eddie Orrell.  Ian was invested in the lives of all he encountered, whether that be students, student teachers, or those members of the community that sought his counsel and support through the Constituency office.  Everyone left with a smile and most likely a little laugh because he brightened everyone’s day.

Ian was predeceased by his loving parents, Doug and Connie MacDonald, and the love of his life, Diane (Clarkson) MacDonald.

Dad is survived by his loving children, Jennifer (Todd) and Sean (Amy); his pride and joy – his grandson Eli, and step-granddaughter, Kelsey, his brothers, Stuart (Linda), and Bill (Alice), along with Sister-in-law, Shirley Clarkson, and his many nieces and nephews, and cousins. Joined to mourn are many family and close friends including his uncle, Keith (Pat) MacDonald, all of Diane’s extended family, close cousin Blanche Gibbs, his friend who was like another son, Cecil Clarke, along with his companion and fellow adventurer, Ann Andrews.

A special thank you for outstanding care, understanding and compassion is extended to Dr. Michel McKeough and Louise McKeough for always following up and providing excellent medical and personal support.  Heartfelt appreciation is extended to our St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church family and friends.

Cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation at Ian’s request.  A memorial service celebrating Ian’s life will be held on Friday, July 26, 2019, at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Main St., Sydney Mines at 2 pm with both Rev. Corrie Stewart and Rev. Marion Barclay McKay officiating.  Following the service the family will celebrate Ian’s life in the Church Hall.

Donations in Ian’s memory may be made to St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church.

Dad would not want us to mourn his loss but to raise a toast with your best scotch or take a cruise on a motorcycle and free your mind through the winding roads, or simply be humble and kind.

Online condolences may be sent to the family at:

“But those who look to the LORD will win new strength, they will soar as on eagles’ wings; they will run and not feel faint, march on and not grow weary.” Isaiah 40:31

Ian was one of my favorite teachers of all time. I still remember his enthralling history lessons. He inspired me to teach and I have to say, I "borrowed" a lot of his style. What a super cool man. Sending hugs to his family. So sorry to hear about this tragic loss. He was a bright light in a dark world. Thank you, Ian! <3

I am truly sorry to hear of Mr. MacDonald’s passing. He was my Grade 10 history teacher and I’ve never forgotten what he taught me. I loved that class. I loved the way he taught. I’ve remembered the most random bits and snippets from world history - and he covered ALL of it in a year! He inspired me to think beyond what was around me and and was part of my decision to travel and live the way I do. I have thought of Mr. MacDonald throughout the years and will continue to do so. Many condolences.

My deepest condolences to Ian's family and most especially to his beloved Ann Andrews with whom he shared his great love, his life and his adventures over these past three years. Ann and Ian were inseparable and this is truly a tribute to two wonderful, generous and genuine people who showed us all that there is indeed love again after tragic loss. Sadly, another tragic loss has left Ann without her Ian.

I am so sorry to hear of Mr. MacDonald's passing. I was his pre-service teacher in the early 2000's and I will never forget him - he was a terrific mentor who was not only incredibly kind to both myself and the students but he also built meaningful relationships with them, which was evident by his classroom being full every lunch hour! As my practicum came to a close he told me to 'enjoy the best profession on the planet' which was a testament to his passion as an educator and a statement I think he lived by.
My sincerest condolences to his family and friends during this difficult time.
