John Dan Jobes
Sydney Mines / Ingonish

It is with profound sadness and deepfelt sorrow that we, the family of John Dan Jobes, announce his peaceful passing at home, on Wednesday, May 13,2020, with his loving children by his side. Born December 27, 1932 in Capstick, Cape Breton. He was the son of the late John and Sadie (MacEachern) Jobes and resided in Sydney Mines until the death of his father in a mining accident. He returned to Black Point, where he learned and understood the value of hard work and a self-sufficient approach to life.
As a young man he relocated to Sydney Mines, where he commenced work at Princess Colliery advanced to the position of Overman. He was a dedicated and well-respected miner who established life long friendships with many, especially the late Jiggs Snow. He shared a neighbouring fence with his sister and brother-in-law, Mae and Bob MacDonald, maintaining a close and life long supportive relationship with them and their 16 children.
Years of Camper Trailering in Broad Cove Camp Ground rooted John Dan, Nora and family in Ingonish, and in 1973 purchased a summer home in Ingonish. Shortly afterwards they established a craft shop featuring the artesian of the Mad Potters of Sydney Mines, and later the Seagull Restaurant, where he remained active in its operation for 45 years. The restaurant staff were always considered to be part of John Dan’s family. A feeling that was obviously reciprocated with most affectionately calling him Grampy. During this time, the community of Ingonish held an incredibly special place in his heart. Over the years John Dan developed many special friendships, especially with his “Ol Buddies” Ewart Hardy and Raymond MacLellan
A true family man and a man of patience, John Dan was a considerate father, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle and cherished partner. His endearing relationship with each child and grandchild will be forever etched in their heart. He openly reminded them of his love and how proud he was of their accomplishments; everyone was Grampy’s baby.
During his retirement John Dan enjoyed working at the Seagull during the summer months and trips to Florida in the late winter, accompanied by Bev, his best co-pilot. He was strong in his culture and reveled in local ceilidhs, productions at the Savoy, Gaelic music and language.
John Dan was a no-nonsense man and approached life with practical knowledge and know how. He was strong in his faith and was an adherent parishioner of Holy Family Parish and demonstrated his faith by example.
John Dan is survived by his beloved companion of 21 years Beverly Mitchelitis, his children, Gail MacLean (the late Donnie Mac Lean), Manning (Andre), Joanne (Raymond) Burchell, Lori Lynn (Gary) Jessome, and Kara Jane Jobes (Travis Williams). Also left to mourn are his 10 grandchildren: Brandon, Tiffany, Erika, Joshua, Jonathan, Justin, Lauryn, Jeremy, Kody, and Brandi Lee, 13 great grandchildren, brother Billy Vanachuck, many nieces and nephews, and the Mitchelitis Family.
Besides his parents, John Dan was predeceased by his wife of 43 years Nora (Murphy), granddaughter Paige Burchell, son-in-law, Donnie MacLean, sister and brother-in-law, Mae and Bob MacDonald, brother, Ebbie Capstick and step-father, John S. MacKinnon.
Due to the current Covid 19 Pandemic, there will be no visitation. A Memorial Mass will take place at a later date.  Arrangements are under the care and direction of JM Jobes Funeral Home, owned and operated by John Dan’s only son Manning, an accomplishment that made him so proud.
Donations in John Dan’s memory may be made to St. Joseph Cemetery Fund, Sydney Mines. Words of comfort may be forwarded to the family at www.jmjobesfuneralhome.com

I have fond memories of John Dan when I visited Cape Breton when I was younger. Every year I paid a visit to the gift shop and the restaurant and he always remembered me. We always had a nice long chat to catch up with each other. I hadn't seem in in quite a few years, but I never forgot how kind he was to me during my visits with him. My condolences to his family. He will be missed. Rest in Peace John Dan. The world has lost a very sweet man.

Oh dear, I just read your dad's obituary. I was so surprised and immediately felt so bad for all of you. Growing up I spent a lot of time at the Jobes and John Dan was the nicest and kind man. He was the epitome of a true gentleman. He was so well suited to your mom, Nora because I remember her as the epitome of a lady. I always felt so welcomed at the Jobes and it was the first time I have ever eaten a poptart! The little things you remember from childhood.Know my heart is very heavy for all of you. You are all beautiful thoughtful people and I give all the credit to both your parents!!!!!!

We loved that place and he always made us feel so welcome and special. I will miss his gentle but strong spirit. I know Brother would’ve known how to celebrate his life in the most perfect way and I’m sorry we can’t all get together to participate in that. Sending my love.❤️

My heart skipped a beat when I saw John Dan's obit. John Dan and Nora visited us in the Bay during the summers and I looked forward to seeing Gail and "Brother" and seeing Joannes long hair! The younger children I did not get to see so often, by this time the Jobes had become business owners. Danny's mother was Dodie Capstick and she knew John Dan in their very young years. He was always kind and respectful and seemed to know everyone. He will be sadly missed, but his memory will live on in all those who knew and loved him. Blessings to all his family.

Our sincere condolences are extended to all. We got to know John Dan a little when our youngest daughter Maria worked at the Seagull for the summer after High School. We would visit her "down" in Ingonish and of course we would always stop in for a bite, whether Maria was on-shift or not. What a wonderful person he was ... always taking the time to talk, so very friendly, speaking well of everyone ... just a genuinely kind & caring soul. He & Bev, and indeed all Jobes Family members working there treated Maria so well and looked out for her... like one of their own... one of the Family ! We know that you are all proud of John Dan and well should be ... he was indeed a "Gentlemens Gentleman" !
Take Care & God Bless

Sincere and Heartfelt Sympathy to Manning and all of the family of John Dan..He was someone i knew since a very young age living in Capstick. A real gentleman who never forgot his roots and was always so happy to talk with all who came in the seagull especially if they were from down north. Blessings to all of your family at this sad time.
Rest In Peace John Dan.

I’m so sorry to hear about John Dan he was a wonderful man. I first met John while working at Prince Mine. I was from Sydney and knew nothing about coal mining. John Dan took me under his wing and took care of me, showed me the ropes ! For that I’m truly grateful. He was a very well respected miner , and I feel fortunate to have met him. He was a really good guy !
