Reginald (Reggie) Rupert Fry
Sydney Mines

Reginald Rupert Fry, 88, passed away peacefully on Monday, August 10, 2020, at the Northside General Hospital. Born in Florence on August 6, 1932, he was the son of the late William and Ethel Fry.
In his younger years, he worked as an elevator operator at the VG Hospital in Halifax. Eventually, he came to work in the coal mines of Cape Breton for 38 years, where he was well liked and respected by his peers.
Reg loved playing baseball as a young man and enjoyed watching kids play it when he got older. He took pride in his flower garden and never failed to wave at every single car that he passed when on his walks. He had a love for children, who all affectionately referred to him as “Poppy”. He was a regular fixture at the North Sydney Mall and Sobeys, where they always ensured that he got his share of the freshest baked goods.
Reg is survived by his sons, Kevin (Irene) and Keith (Noelle); special daughter, Debbie Milley; grandchildren Brandon (Alyssa), Tiffany, Aaron, and Zachary; great-grandson, Dominick; and his partner of over 40 years, Pauline MacLean.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Anna (McPhee), with whom he fostered many children, and his mother-in-law, Ethel McPhee, whom he lovingly cared for for many years.
A special thanks is due to Crown Taxi, especially Bernie Gillis, who always made sure that Reg and Pauline had their fish suppers delivered on Fridays. We would also like to thank Drs. Alison Archibald and Andrew Wawer, as well as staff at the Cape Breton Regional and Northside General Hospitals for their compassion, kindness, and professionalism. Finally, thank you to J. M. Jobes Funeral Home for helping to fulfill Poppy’s final wishes. He will be sorely missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him. Because of Reg’s love of community, we invite you to consider making a donation in his memory to the Sydney Mines Food Bank. There will be no visitation. A graveside service will take place on Monday, August 17, 2020, at 1 pm in St. Joseph Cemetery, Sydney Mines. All are welcome. Please respect Covid restrictions. Words of comfort may be forwarded to his family at www.jmjobesfuneralhome.com

Condolences to the family and community. I heard much great things about Poppy through his beloved grandson Brandon (my informal son in law). Although my family and I cannot be there to support Brandon and family, we will be thinking of you. And we will hug you when you get back. Take this time to remember and celebrate a great life. Anne

Our thoughts and prayers are with family and all those who loved and grieve at this time. Its been years since we were up home.. Ken is the son the late Fred & Mary who were brother to Reg and sister to Anna in case you dont know the connection. When Kens father passed away Reg called us and opened your home to us and helped us through a pretty tough time and his kindness and caring has never been forgotten. I pray the pain of his passing is soon dulled by fond memories and the knowledge that he will never truly leave you all.

Our sincere condolences to the family. Reggie was a wonderful neighbor to my grandparents for many years and more recently to Leo and I. We will miss our weekly exchange of goodies and daily conversations. Reggie always had a chocolate bar for Leo, his little Pal. His kind and gentle soul is something to be admired. He will be greatly missed.
