Mary H. Macdonald
Sydney Mines

It is with deep sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Mary H. Macdonald (“Mary Tom”) at the age of 103, on Friday, September 18, 2020 in the Palliative Care Unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
Born in Sydney Mines on January 4, 1917, Mary was the daughter of the late Leonard and Leah (Banfield) Hollett.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband of 56 years, Thomas J. Macdonald, and her only son, George R. Macdonald.  She was one of nine children, and predeceased by two brothers Bill and Cliff, and five sisters – Ada, Irene, Margaret, Evelyn, and Lennie and special cousin Verna.
Mary is survived by one sister, Mildred Grant (Victoria, BC). She is also survived by three daughters – Lee Harding, Marilou (Bill) Boutilier, and Kathy (Arthur) Zilbert, as well as daughter-in-law Gina Macdonald, and dear friend Theresa MacGillivary.  She was proud “Nana” to nine grandchildren – Kathy Macdonald, Len (Lori) Macdonald, Karen (Trent) Harris, Heather (Troy) Ferneyhough, Aaron Boutilier, Jason Boutilier, Rebecca (Jason) Phillips, Nathan (Alexandra) Zilbert and Leah (Peter) Witz.  She was also proud “Gigi” to ten great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Mary was a life-long resident of Sydney Mines.  She was a faithful member of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, and often spoke fondly of her close church family.  She was a life member of the Ruth AMS, and active in many church and community activities throughout her life.  She loved to swim, and up until this past January was a frequent visitor to the Northside Pool where she developed many close friendships with her fellow swimmers.
The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to the many caregivers who took such wonderful care of Mary during the last few months.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, or charity of choice.
Due to Covid-19 restrictions, there will be no visitation.  There will be a graveside service in Brookside Cemetery, Sydney Mines on Saturday, September 26, 2020 at 2pm.  All who knew Mary are welcome to attend.  Words of comfort may be forwarded to her family at www.jmjobesfuneralhome.com

While we didn't know Mary personally we certainly knew about her. Through word of mouth and the articles written, we felt like we knew her. Mary was the bright light for all the noon time swimmers at the pool. She always had a smile and a happy word for everyone she met . It was not hard when guarding the swim to know where Mary was in the pool. Her laugh could be heard and that of those around her as she always had a joke to tell.
Mary was a “bright light”, and will be missed by everyone. Blessed to have know her.

Dear Lee, MaryLou, and Kathy:
So sorry to hear of your Mom’s passing. She was certainly “ One of A Kind”. Such a smart, caring and generous woman. She will be missed by so many.
I visited with her several years ago when I was having Physio at HarborView after knee surgery and she was the same Mary Tom I remembered as a child.
Always Sweet and always interested in her extended family.
Take Care and Love,
Suzanne
